Nostalgic Air

Posted on: Wednesday, September 17, 2014

In an attempt to condense my closet, I've been looking into pieces that are versatile and can be worn often. However, I noticed this influenced my purchases to be black, white or grey and an occasional olive green piece. So in a recent purchase, I opted for a color (camel) staple pencil skirt just to create a dynamic palette. This skirt can be worn in so many ways! I was considering creating a post in which I featured at least two looks, but I got too excited to share the pics, so I guess the other looks will have to wait.

Fall is slowly creeping in, and with the chilly nostalgic air joins the return of reoccurring fall trends such as oversized chunky sweaters, black ankle boots and of course plaid! Inspired by some Pinterests street style photos I have recently pinned, I decided to do an editorial like post with very simple style ideas.
For aesthetic purposes, I kept the outfits white, red and black. However, a red flannel shirt can complete many color palettes and can be used as an accent color/fabric for outfits as featured above. Simply tying a bright flannel around your waist can bring a pop of color to your look. Check out how my favorite blogger Genesis, from the Brunnette Braid, used this trick here in her sophisticated evening look.
It can be confusing to dress during the beginning of fall. Slightly breezy, however to cold to bare in a sleeveless dresses, a flannel is a simple fix as a light jacket without the overheating and bulkiness.
Converting your shirt into a skirt is a quick creative fix for a those inconvenient laundry days. Complete a shirt skirt with a button up or a tee and you have an effortless sophisticated look.  To create this skirt, wrap the sleeves of an open shirt around your waist. Then starting from the bottom, button up your shirt until your reach your waist.

For more quick fix ideas or style inspirations, follow my boards on PINTEREST! I would love to see what inspires you as well.

I would also like to thank my best friend Rocio for shooting these looks! We did this shoot in the pouring rain (as you can tell with my fuzzy hair),  so I really appreciate her support! Thanks love!

This past month, I had the opportunity to reconnect with friends I hadn't seen in a while. I decided to feature them on my blog under this month's Style Spotlight Series that I plan on posting once a month. Each person featured on this edition of the series are young creatives and I highly recommend you check out their work.
Annette Guzik! Rockin her high ponytail; a homage to the 90's grudge movement. I love her contrast of edge and sweetness with her bicycle in the last photo. Annette has always had a knack for incorporating great vintage pieces in her looks. Besides her sweet meets grudge style, she is a talented artist and does great henna designs! She has decorated my hands a few times and she does the designs so quickly its really amazing. Check out her instagram to check out more of her looks and henna work @orange_walrus!
Sam Rangel! I've known Sam since high school and I can testify she has always had a fierce sense of style. She also incorporates great vintage pieces in her looks and seamlessly blends pieces from luxury/boutique brands. Low key, I always looked forward to catching her on the train in the morning to our design classes during college. Besides her great eye for style, Sam is also a talented photographer and designer. She has the gift of capturing the most simplest moments and adding a twist of humor. Just check out her colorful feed on Instagram @samwrangle!  Almost everyday she has a mini adventure.
Carmen Henry! A fellow style blogger, I met up with the sweet Carmen to shoot some looks for her blog theartofvintagerevival. I love how she incorporates patterns into most of her looks. Patterns are something I hope to slowly incorporate into my wardrobe. However, I'm not a morning person, so simple colors make the process of getting ready so much easier. Check out her Instagram as well @carmenhenry

This trending accessory adds a great touch to causal outfits, as you can see I've been using it quite often. Its been so much easier to carry my camera everywhere, instead of an over the shoulder bag. I am so obsessed with black backpacks and I feel like its a great fall essential, I will be giving away the ASOS backpack featured above.

I can't stress enough how important eyebrows are in framing a person's face. I feel so strongly, that below are some quick tips on how to fill in your eyebrows and maintain their shape. Typically behind the lens, Rocio is our model for this tutorial since she has the fiercest eyebrows that I have eva seen! Doesn't her skin look amazing?? And she's not wearing a drop of makeup!

Whether you just got your eyebrows freshly waxed/threaded or you are letting them grow out for a new shape, wax is a great way to keep the hair in place. If you usually pencil in your eyebrows, wax works as a primer and allows the pigment to last longer. However, don't apply too much! You don't want your eyebrows to look flat or oily. That just wouldn't look cute.

To avoid intense looking eyebrows, with your angled brow brush swipe a suitable brow powder and line the bottom of your eyebrow as shown above. Then using the powder from the line you created brush upward.

This summer I have been obsessed with mules. Seeing that cooler airs are creeping up on us here in Chicago, mules are a great transition shoe into the fall. The mules featured above are so comfortable, I can definitely see myself wearing them for work. Below I have featured two looks as a suggestion on how mules can add an effortless modern twist to almost any outfit.

Second Look: Tee: Zara// White Shorts : Levi's// Earrings: Topshop// Necklace: WWILLTHEBEAST// Mules: Dolce Vida//

When I coordinate outfits I like to create balance. So if I'm wearing a short bottom, I'll pair it with a high cut shirt and vice versa. Mules are a great way to balance out an outfit especially if they have a chunky heel. Since I was wearing a crop top and a skirt with a mesh insert, I felt that for a Happy Hour outfit, mules would be a great cop out from pumps. They are comfortable and still conserves the modernity of the outfit.

First Look: Blazer: H&M// Crop Top: Akira// Pencil Skirt: Zara// Rings: Akira// Necklace: WWILLTHEBEAST//

Mules can easily bump up a casual outfit. Pair it with shorts and tee and you have an effortless chic look.  I'm actually looking forward to the warm tone palette that invades my closet during the fall and I decided to subtly introduce that in this outfit.

A huge THANK YOU to ROCIO ROBLES for taking the pictures!! Thanks ma!!

Song of the Day: On the Line | Blood Orange

I'm so sad I missed Blood Orange this summer as he came to perform for Lollapalooza. However, my friend, Lisa got to be up close during his pre show performance at Empty Bottle. Check out her review on GOWHEREHIPHOP.COM HERE

For those of you who have been following my blog, you might already know how much I looove to exfoliate. Taking care of your skin in my opinion is a crucial investment of time and money. You can wear designer pieces or the latest trends, but if your are ashy you are not going to look cute, #letsbefrank. Rocio put me on, Frank Body Scub and I'm so glad she did! I love it so much I will be giving away one original body scrub below.

Frank Body Scrubs all have coffee grains with the addition of exotic oils and fruit extracts that moisturize the skin during the exfoliation process. Frank scrubs targets cellulite, stretch marks, psoriasis, varicose veins, eczema and even acne. I've always battled with Keratosis Pilaris ( chicken bumps) on my arms (which is common among Latinos) and I can honestly say that after a few weeks I've seen a dramatic reduction of size. Although I still have some bumps, they are a lot smaller and smoother, almost flat. What Frank does for me no other scrub has done before. I actually like Frank more than my once beloved Lush Ocean Salt Scrub, which is saying a lot since I was a strong advocate before. Frank is messier than most scrubs, but getting dirty can be fun.

This Australian brand that has been rising in the market. Aimee Song of Song of Style is also a Frank fan as seen on her Instagram with a Frank selfie. I highly encourage you check out the site and blog, its funny and engaging.

Now for the giveaway. This giveway is simple. Just sign up below and cross your fingers because this scrub will leave you feeling like a goddess. If this giveaway is not for you, thas cool (I guess), just visit the site again for the next giveaway that will be posted sometime next week. Or you could just follow me on Instagram for more updates, just saying.  Good Luck and thank you for your support thus far! Winners will be announced on August 12 on my Instagram.
